Activists and human rights advocates have raised alarm over the increasing use of sexual violence as a weapon of war in Sudan’s ongoing conflict. Speaking at the 2025 Global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence event in Kampala, Sudanese women refugees and regional leaders called for urgent action to protect women and girls affected by the crisis.
The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has led to a severe breakdown of law and order. According to activists, this has created conditions where sexual and gender-based violence is being deliberately used to terrorize communities, silence women, and destabilize society.
Speakers highlighted that women’s bodies have become battlegrounds, with violence extending beyond physical attacks to include harassment, threats, and intimidation in digital spaces. Young activists from conflict-affected regions such as North Darfur emphasized that girls face daily risks and lack adequate protection.
The event concluded with strong calls for regional cooperation, accountability, and concrete measures to end impunity, support survivors, and ensure the safety and dignity of women and girls caught in the Sudan conflict.
